FLUID TECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABILITY

The “Onda” Lamp by Claudio Gioserio

How do we reduce the energy impact of lighting solutions in this historical period, in which environmental concerns have become extremely urgent? Considering sustainability as one of the founding aspects of design is today a sine qua non for all designers. It is essential that we start with our everyday actions, such as switching a light on. This is precisely the case of the Lamp project patented in 2014 by Claudio Gioserio, which was conceived with the intention of solving a number of typical defects of LED lamps. This technology, among the most widely used today, is the most energy-efficient but has the defect of causing discomfort if looked at directly. The idea of this patent is to use a plastic material, not very thick and highly transparent as if it were an optical fiber to transport the light energy. Small holes are punctured through this material, so the light is diffused thanks to a system of refractions within the plastic material itself. The result is a sophisticated and elegantly designed table lamp, minimal and contemporary, which does not sacrifice luminous efficiency. Almost all of the light emitted by the LED light bulb pours out, in a uniform and suffused manner, without being disturbing. This is the innovation: the skill of combining material and light, creating a design that responds to both the functional and aesthetic aspects. The last project designed with this principle, Onda, won the first prize at the regional selection in the Lazio Region's space at the Maker Faire 2019, the most important fair of innovation in Europe.
